Bells Fell on Alabama - March 16-18, 2007 The ringers at the Cathedral of St. Paul hosted their first ever open ringing weekend. The weekend included a half peal in memory of James "Chris" Bates, who was a sub-foreman during the renovation and tower construction.
First Peal on the Bells A visiting band of the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths rang the first peal on the bells on December 8, 2006. The peal took just over three hours and consisted of 5,088 changes of Birmingham Surprise Major. (The method is of course named for Birmingham, England, which is quite a strong ringing city.) The band also rang a second peal the next day.
Half-Muffled Half Peal Rung On June 24, 2006, eight ringers from across North America rang a half peal in memory of good friend Derek Sawyer. These 2,520 changes of Grandsire Triples were the first organized ringing on the bells. The bells had just been installed in May and the tower and ringing room had not yet been completed. A video clip (2.3 MB) of some of this ringing is now available.
There are bells in Alabama! Yes, tower bells! A glorious ring of 8 bells cast by Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, installed in May 2006 and dedicated on October 22, 2006. The ringers at the Cathedral of St. Paul are dedicated to learning the ancient art of change ringing. We invite you to join us in this endeavor.
